The Community Plastics cleanup

The Community Plastics cleanup is a collaboration between The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund and 18 SpareBank 1 foundations across Norway. It gives children and young people the opportunity to collect plastic litter while at the same time raising money for their association.

What is The Community Plastics cleanup?

A plastics cleanup is a cleanup effort involving several participants, in other words planned litter collection in the local community and/or natural areas. The area to be cleaned up must be described in the application. It is not opportunity to clean up the association’s own areas. This applies to areas around the association’s own premises, for example sports halls, pitches, clubhouses, etc.

Important information about the application deadline

To ensure that cleanup and reporting are completed by the 10 June deadline, we are closing the call for applications. 31 May at 23:59This gives the organisations sufficient time to carry out community work and submit a final report. We also need time to process the applications so that any funding can be paid out before the summer holidays.

Who can apply?

Associations that...
  • Has members aged 6–19

  • Is registered in the Brønnøysund Register Centre and has an organisation number

  • For example, sports clubs, clubs, bands, twirling teams, choirs

Who cannot apply?
  • Housing cooperatives, residents’ associations, schools and russ groups

  • Associations with plastics/the environment as their main purpose

  • FAU where this is not permittedCheck here)

Before you apply
    • Account number that is linked to your organisation number. You must use the same account number in all applications from the same association.
    • Cleanup areaTake a walk in your local area and find a public area that needs cleaning up. Requirements for the cleanup area:
      • The area cannot have been cleaned recently
      • It cannot be a separate facility or private area
      • Avoid vulnerable natural areas and protected areas, such as nature reserves. Check The Norwegian Environment Agency's map
      • Areas cleaned during the spring Community Plastics cleanup cannot be cleaned again
    • Number of participants: Provide a rough estimate of how many children and young people (aged 6–19) you think will take part in the dugnad.
    • Dugnad dateFind one or more dates that may be suitable for carrying out the community work.
    • Please note: The application form must be completed on a PC or Mac. Mobile does not work.

Requirements for implementation
    • At least one adult from the association must be responsible for implementation.
    • You have HSE responsibility – see tips at Hold Norge Rent and Rusken.
    • Take Photos along the way to document the community work (you do not need to show the children's faces)
    • All participants must clean up for at least three hours – the hours can be spread over several days.
    • Only members aged 6–19 count as participants and qualify for funding. Adult participants do not qualify for funding.
    • Make a note of how many full waste sacks (approx. 120–160 litres) collected – this must be reported in the final report.
    • The waste must be delivered to an approved receipt.
      • There is It is not permitted to dispose of the waste in containers belonging to private individuals, municipalities or businesses.
      • Feel free to contact the waste management company in advance. Some offer free delivery, especially if they are aware of Hold Norge Rent's reimbursement scheme for marine litter.
      • Any costs must be covered by the community work funds you receive.
    • Take nature into account when planning where and when to carry out cleanup:
    • There are Not permitted to carry out cleanup in vulnerable or protected areas.
      👉 Use The Norwegian Environment Agency's map and tick the box for Nature reserve bottom left.
    • Avoid areas with Bird nesting during the period 15 April to 15 July (local access restrictions may apply).
    • Use common sense and show consideration for nature and wildlife.
Requirements for applying
    • You cannot invite participants to or carry out the cleanup before you have been notified that The application has been approved.
    • Once the application has been approved, you must log in and sign the letter of acceptance i The project portal.
    • You must purchase it yourselves gloves and rubbish sacks – the expenses must be covered by the dugnad funds paid out to you.
    • Print out the participant list (use our target in word or spreadsheet). All participants (aged 6–19) must be listed here. The list must be attached to the final report.
