NOK 68 million for reduced plastic use and a circular economy

Through the call for applications “Reduced plastic use and a circular plastics economy”, The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund has awarded NOK 68.4 million to 12 ambitious projects. This year’s main priority is packaging – the area where plastic consumption is highest.

The aim of the grant allocation is to support selected projects with the potential to transform how we use and recycle plastic in Norway. By targeting funds towards actors with significant impact, the Fund seeks to create lasting change in the Norwegian plastics economy.

Resolving bottlenecks in the recycling chain

Far too large a share of plastic waste currently goes straight to incineration. Several projects are therefore being supported that improve the sorting out of plastic from residual waste in both municipalities and businesses.

De-packaging: One of the projects addresses the challenge of removing packaging from food products that have passed their expiry date, so that the plastic can be recycled efficiently.

Investing in new business models

Circular business models are also receiving a substantial boost in this round. Significant grants have been awarded to innovative solutions for the reuse of packaging and the recycling of mattresses – a product that has traditionally been challenging to manage in the waste stream.
